Open East Festival, 27 & 28 July 2013, to feature The Real Food Festival,Buccaneers Banquet on the Bridge and a Ten Mile Beer Festival
Fish dogs, Bhangra burgers and Mamma’s Jerk chicken are on the menu at the Open East Festival in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
Open East Festival marks the one year anniversary of the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony as well as the start of the phased opening of the Park to the public.
Open East Festival is a weekend of international music, food, theatre, family fun, art and much more, opening up the north area of the Park to thousands of people for this packed weekend of entertainment and activity, art and food programmed by the Barbican and Create London.
The Real Food Festival will create a celebration of the best food producers, street food vendors and top chefs and will showcase the creativity and diversity of London and the East End.
Top chefs including Cyrus Todiwala, Stevie Parle, Ben Tish of Salt Yard Group, Mark Jarvis of Blueprint Café and Kevin Gratton of Hix restaurants will be on hand to inspire visitors in the Real Food Chef Theatre. Some of the country’s best street food vendors will also be on site serving up dishes ranging from premium hot dogs, real Indian street food and home cooked Caribbean jerk dishes.
The street vendors will represent the full breadth and depth of London’s gastronomic cultural character with those present including Big Apple Hot Dogs, Pizza Pilgrims,Horn OK Please, Mamma’s Jerk Station, Community Kitchen, Hix Fish Dogs,Bhangra Burger with Dock Kitchen, Café Spice Namaste and Salt Yard Group.
Open East Festival is set amongst the meadows and lawns of the river valley in the north of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. It’s a beautiful spot to enjoy enjoy some of the tasty morsels on offer from London’s best street food vendors.
There will even be a ‘Buccaneers Banquet on the Bridge’ over the River Lea.
Visitors will also be able to sample beers from local breweries from within a 10 mile radius of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park at The Ten Mile Beer Festival which will feature Sambrook’s Brewery from Battersea, Meantime Brewing Company from Greenwich and The Five Point Brewing Company and Crate Brewery, both from Hackney.
Open East Festival
The Open East Festival will include a host of international music acts on the main music and Caught by the River stages including The Waterboys, Seun Kuti with special guests Robert Glasper & Dead Prez, a supergroup of Malian artists including celebrated duo Amadou and Mariam, Vieux Farka Touré and Fatoumata Diawaraassembled by Cheick Tidian Seck, Ondatropica featuring Quantic and Frente Cumbiero, U-Roy, Bomba Estéreo, Jupiter & Okwess International, Soul Caribbean,DJ Don Letts, Wire, Stealing Sheep, Viv Albertine, Le Volume Courbe and The Rockingbirds.
The Fairey Band, also known as Acid Brass, will also be performing at the festival. Acid Brass the brainchild of Jeremy Deller is the unlikely fusion of Acid House anthems with the sound of a traditional British Brass Band. Their performances of music by groups like the KLF, 808 State and many more have been huge hits with audiences at music festivals across Europe and beyond.
Open East Festival promises a fantastic day out in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park for all the family. Young visitors will be enchanted by The House of Fairy Tales who will be presenting their legendary Travelling Art Circus (which includes Gavin Turk’s Space Pyramid), encounter Joey from the acclaimed National Theatre production War Horse,and be mesmerised by Graeae’s production of Ted Hughes’ The Iron Man.
There will also be opportunities to witness performances from some leading east London artists and organisations, unearth a future masterpiece at the Art Car Boot Fair(featuring Bob & Roberta Smith, Gavin Turk and leading East London street artist Pure Evil), experience the Pandemonium Drummers and BMX riders from the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony and explore London’s newest park.
Sacrilege, the life-sized inflatable bouncy castle replica of Stonehenge by Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller, will finally make its way into Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park as part of the festival and Bompas & Parr, named by the Independent as ‘one of the 15 people who will define the future of arts in Britain’, have been commissioned to create thefinale for each day.
